For multilingual families, this season brings both opportunity and concern: How can we make the most of the extra time at home or on the go to support our child\u2019s languages? And what role should apps, videos, and digital media play in that journey?<\/p>\n
Media is a much-debated concept in child multilingualism research. While it can support language maintenance and even contribute to language learning in older children who already have a solid foundation, its effectiveness is far more limited for younger kids or those less fluent in a particular language. Passive exposure through screens simply can\u2019t compete with the richness of play, face-to-face conversations, and emotionally engaging interaction \u2014 which remain the most powerful ways children acquire and develop language.<\/p>\n
That said, in today\u2019s digital world where children inevitably engage with media, it\u2019s important not to ignore its role \u2014 but to approach it thoughtfully and intentionally. That\u2019s what motivated me to write this blog: to explore how screen time can be turned into an ally for multilingual families, especially during the long and often unstructured weeks of summer.<\/p>\n
\ud83c\udfaf Why We Lean into Media \u2014 and When<\/strong><\/p>\n As a multilingual family ourselves, we\u2019ve found that screen time can actually be a valuable support in our daughter\u2019s language development \u2014 when used in the right way. She\u2019s almost 7 now, and during our summer holidays in Finland (my home country), she\u2019s surrounded by Finnish all day \u2014 with grandparents, cousins, hobbies, and everyday outings. At that point, we focus on Finnish: shows with Finnish dubbing, educational apps, and reading games to support her home language literacy.<\/p>\n This kind of seasonal balancing has been a simple yet effective way to support both languages throughout the year.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \ud83d\udcf1 Tips for Using Media to Support Multilingual Development<\/strong><\/p>\n Whether you\u2019re traveling or staying home, here are some strategies we\u2019ve found helpful \u2014 supported by research and real-life experience:<\/p>\n Use screen time to support the weaker or less-used language at the time. This can help balance the input your child receives naturally through their surroundings.<\/p>\n Whenever possible, co-watch or co-play. Pause to talk about the story, ask questions, or repeat fun phrases. Retelling what they\u2019ve watched in their own words is great for language development.<\/p>\n For kids who are starting to read, use same-language subtitles (e.g., English audio + English subtitles). It supports word recognition and builds early literacy skills.<\/p>\n If they watch a baking video, try making the recipe together while continuing to use the same language. It becomes a fun little ritual, rather than just screen time for its own sake.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \ud83e\udde0 The Big Picture: Screens as a Supplement, Not a Solution<\/strong><\/p>\n To wrap up: screen time isn\u2019t a magic solution, but it can be a helpful tool when guided by family goals and your child\u2019s language needs. For older children or those with an existing foundation in the language, it\u2019s a way to maintain and build vocabulary, reinforce pronunciation, and stay connected to the language in meaningful ways.<\/p>\n But it\u2019s still no substitute for play, conversation, storytelling, and everyday interaction \u2014 those remain at the heart of language development.
