Life has a way of demanding our attention in different directions at different times, and over the past months, I found myself deeply immersed in transitions, responsibilities, and decisions that required my full focus. Sometimes, stepping back is not about losing momentum, but about allowing things to settle so that the next chapter can begin with clarity and purpose.

Now, as a new year unfolds, I am very consciously back on track with this platform on child multilingualism—ready to dedicate more time, energy, and reflection to a topic that is so close to my heart.

New Beginnings, Professionally and Personally

The start of 2026 feels like a new beginning in many ways. I step into this year in a new role as a full-time Professor, surrounded by new connections, fresh collaborations, and exciting opportunities that extend across academia, practice, and community engagement. These changes did not happen overnight, nor by accident. They unfolded gradually, reminding me that life often has its own plan for us—and that, more often than not, things fall into place at exactly the right time.

This perspective makes me deeply optimistic about what 2026 will bring. Not because everything will be easy or predictable, but because growth tends to emerge when professional purpose and personal values begin to align more clearly.

The Year of Family: A Perfect Moment to Return

Here in the UAE, the year has begun with a theme that could not be more fitting for this platform. Following the directives of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, 2026 has been designated as the Year of Family.

The Year of Family places the family at the very center of societal wellbeing—recognizing it as the foundation of a strong, united, and compassionate community. Its aim is to deepen awareness of the importance of nurturing close family bonds, the roots from which resilient communities grow, while upholding the UAE’s enduring values of unity, care, and cooperation, and ensuring that these values are passed on to future generations.

For anyone working with children, parents, or education—this message resonates deeply.

Family as the First Language Environment

Child multilingualism does not begin in schools, apps, or formal programs. It begins at home. It begins in everyday routines, bedtime stories, shared meals, playful conversations, and emotional connections. Family is the first language policy a child ever experiences—often unconsciously shaped by parents’ beliefs, habits, hopes, and insecurities.

When families are supported, informed, and confident, multilingualism can flourish naturally. When families feel pressured, confused, or judged, even the richest linguistic environments may struggle to sustain consistency. This is why the Year of Family matters so profoundly for multilingual families: it validates the idea that nurturing children’s linguistic identities is not an extra task—it is part of nurturing the child as a whole.

Looking Ahead

As I return to writing here, my intention for 2026 is simple but meaningful: to offer research-informed insights, honest reflections, and practical encouragement for families raising bilingual and multilingual children. Not perfection. Not rigid formulas. But reassurance, perspective, and evidence-based guidance that respects each family’s unique context.

If life truly does have its own timing, then this feels like the right moment—for this platform, for this conversation, and for a renewed focus on family, language, and belonging.

I look forward to sharing this journey with you in the year ahead.

It has been a while since my last post here.
